When the new 3G model of the iPad was delivered to its first buyers, the milestone was reached on Friday.

On Monday Apple said that the 9.7-inch touchscreen iPad — a new category of device that combines the mobility of a smartphone with the speed of a laptop — reached the million sales mark in only 28 days.

CEO Steve Jobs said: “One million iPads in 28 days — that’s less than half of the 74 days it took to achieve this milestone with iPhone.”

“Demand continues to exceed supply and we’re working hard to get this magical product into the hands of even more customers,” he added.

Apple began the second stage of a two-part roll-out of the iPad on Friday when it started selling the pricier, high-speed wireless model in the U.S., following the launch of the short-range Wi-Fi tablet on 3 April.
