The Marin Sonoma Concours d’Elegance car show will take place at the Marin Center Fairgrounds on May 17, 2009 to showcase classic cars of 1929 and alternative energy cars of the future.
SAN RAFAEL, CA, May 11, 2009 – The inauguration of the first annual Marin Sonoma Concours d’Elegance will take place on Sunday, May 17, 2009, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the picturesque rolling landscape of the Marin Center Fairgrounds of the Civic Center. This benefit event celebrates the luxury of cars of the past, as well as the efficiency of cars of the future.
“This is going to be a very upscale car show,” says Charlie Goodman, acting chairman for the event. The show will feature 180 vintage and classic cars vying for the top spot of Best in Show Concours d’Elegance and Best in Show Concours de Sport. Several special exhibits, along with the feature exhibit, “Curves, Elegance, and Speed – Our Cars of 1929,” will emphasize the artistic design and sophisticated engineering of past and future cars.
Cars of 1929 were the epitome of extravagance and luxury, with flashy designs and state-of-the-art technology. However, as the stock market crashed in 1929, the production of these lavish classic cars also plummeted as many manufacturers went out of business during the Great Depression. Classic cars are now but a souvenir of the opulent lifestyle of the 1920s. A slice of this era will be on display at the Marin Sonoma car show in the form of classic car makes such as Durant, Jordan, Locomobile, Auburn, Cord, Pierce Arrow, Packard, Duesenberg, and Hispano Suiza.
On the other end of the spectrum is a special exhibit entitled, “Alternative Energy Vehicles – Driving Us Forward Into the Future.” Environmentally friendly vehicles that are designed to run on alternative fuel and electricity will be on display, with the Fisker Karma sports car, which runs on the Plug-in hybrid technology Q DRIVE, as the centerpiece. Electric motorcycles, scooters and bicycles will also be exhibited to round out the show.
In addition, there will be exhibits of automotive products and services, live music, food, and family activities to keep everyone entertained.
Tickets are $15 for the general public, and those under 16 years of age receive free admission. Proceeds go towards Hospice By The Bay, a non-profit organization that has taken care of terminally ill patients and their families since 1975.
