Today, CeBIT, the world’s largest ICT expo, was kicked off in Hannover, Germany. It was inaugurated by German Chancellor Angela Merkel together with Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero.

CeBIT, the world’s largest IT & Computer trade fair, hosted by Deutsche Messe AG, since 1986, commenced, today. She expressed that “In rural areas, there is still much to be done,” she said. “I’m not talking about watching movies on mobiles, but simple things like making phone calls.”

And Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, Prime Minister of Spain, who is this year’s “partner country” for CeBIT. In his inaugural speech, Zapatero called for a “single digital market” which would cover the entire European Union (EU) that would avoid the fall back behind the advanced technologies of United States. He said “Europe needs to make progress now in order not to lag behind the United States,” And also added that his country has invested over 11 billion U.S. dollars in IT and communication industry, gaining 11 percent annual growth in the sector, during the period. This 6 day event is scheduled to be closed on Saturday (March 6).

Tony had made remarks on his Friday radio show about ESPN’s Hannah Storm and her attire on television. True or not, ESPN obviously didn’t chuckle about it. Kornheiser had said what Hannah Storm wore on TV was “horrifying”, and that her skirt was “way too short for a woman her age” (which is 47, in case you wondered), somewhat like a “Catholic school plaid skirt.”

Well, fine. Tony has his own humor and he expresses that humor to his listeners. And the trouble is really only there because he is a known figure and many people hear him. If no one listened to him no one would care, right?

If I had to tell my mother that my father looks like a cirus clown who spilt egg and chips on his clothes, then fell in a mud pit and rolled aroud a bit, she wouldn’t really think much of it.

Why? Because I am not an Opinion Leader to her.

Unfortunately, Tony is on radio and PTI and that automatically means people listen to him, so when he shows off his sense of humor the targets of it show off there anger and, if they have any, they show off their power to hurt him back. And the fact that they become offended is only admitting that they think he is an Opinion Leader.

Like the Content Diretor’s statement on tuesday afternoon:

“Tony Kornheiser’s comments about Hannah Storm were entirely inappropriate. Hurtful and personal comments such as these are not acceptable and have significant consequences. Tony has been suspended from PTI for two weeks. Hannah is a respected colleague who has been an integral part of the success of our morning SportsCenter.”

If no one thought of Tony as an Opinion Leader they wouldn’t have to do that, now would they?

Regardless, there is no Tony Kornheiser on ESPN for a little while and ESPN might miss him and they might not. I guess we will see.

Kornheiser did make an apology on his next show saying that he has “no right to insult what anybody looks like or what anybody wears” and that he thinks that “should go without saying.”

Of course it should have gone without saying that Hannah storm looked like she had “sausage casing wrapping around her upper body.” Things like that stand out to people who find humor in everything. Is that really a bad thing?

After all, if we didn’t have people like Tony kornheiser around, what would we have as a source of giggles and chuckles?

Anyhow, I bet Kornheiser will think before he lets his lips go next time.
